The Almost Free Family Fun in Halifax, Nova Scotia DIY Cruise Ship Excursion:
One of the places to visit on your DIY Excursion is the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic which is located along the Harbour Walk and on Lower Water Street next to Sackville Landing.
The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic is the oldest and largest maritime museum in Canada with a collection of over 30,000 artifacts including 70 small craft and one ship, the CSS Acadia. It is a 180 foot steam-powered hydrographic survey ship launched in 1913. The HMCS Sackville, a World War II Flower-class corvette is also docked adjacent to the museum and is open for public viewing during the summer months, but is not owned or administered by the museum.
Exhibits at the museum include a commemoration of the Halifax Explosion, the sinking of RMS Titanic and other shipwrecks, as well as a large gallery on “The Age of Sail”. The museum has the world's foremost collection of wooden artifacts from the Titanic , including one of the only surviving deck chairs. An Age of Steam gallery includes a special display on Samuel Cunard, the Nova Scotian who created the Cunard Line.
In late December 2008, we set out to explore the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic and, more specifically, it’s temporary LEGO exhibit, City by the Sea and Big Harbour which is the set of the television series Theodore TugBoat and on permanent display at the museum. Check out the photos.
I was able to get my grandsons to sit for a moment in the replica of a Titanic deck chair, and I do mean a moment as they were flying around the museum only briefly landing anywhere.....hmmm....maybe it was the chocolate. However, truth be told, the older boy did indeed spend over an hour searching out items in the City by the Sea ‘scavenger hunt list’ and did find most of them, although you really do need a sharp eye for the task.
During your visit to Halifax the Lego exhibit will be gone, but there will be another exhibit in its place. That is the wonder of visiting here, there is always something new to view.
